Oil Pulling 101

What is oil pulling?

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic technique used to remove bacteria from the mouth. Every morning upon waking you swish coconut oil(or sesame oil) around in your mouth for 10-20 minutes. It literally pulls the bad bacteria out of your mouth but leaves the good bacteria there to thrive and continue to contribute to your health. With the toxins out of your mouth it creates an antiseptic oral environment that helps the flow of digestion and prevents infection.

How can oil pulling effect my gut?

You know what they say- digestion starts in the mouth. Think of your mouth as the gatekeeper to the gut. That means whatever is going on in your mouth directly impacts your gut. So the food you eat, the bacteria in your mouth, along with any underlying oral infections could be directly impacting your gut. You are eliminating the bacteria in the mouth, before it even has a chance to disrupt the gut microbiome.

How do I oil pull?

  1. Upon waking I take 1 teaspoon of coconut oil in my mouth and start to break it down.

  2. Swish it around for 10-20 minutes.

  3. Then I spit the oil in my trash can as it can clog your pipes.

I am so passionate about oil pulling because my dentist told me that my tooth and gum health was extraordinary after not going to the dentist for 4 years. Obviously I don’t recommend this, it was an error on my part but to hear that my dental health was still good was so encouraging! When my dentist asked me what I was doing I told her that I oil pull daily and she was convinced that it’s the reason that my teeth and gums looked so healthy.
